The Calm Before the Storm

Yesterday, Jordan pointed out that I haven’t updated the production blog in a while. The truth is, we have been really busy making the film and the production blog has been neglected…oops.

We’ve wrapped shooting on about a third of the movie. We’ve shot almost everything that happens in the present day, and we are busy testing and perfecting our special effects, making rough cuts of scenes, and planning the daunting task that lies ahead:

Shooting 3 armies… The North, The South, and an Army of Frankensteins.

It’s not really as bad as it sounds, but it will push our skills to the limit. Check out this video. It’s what convinced us that what we are attempting is possible.

First 2 days of shooting complete.

When we were deciding which scenes to start with, we picked the grocery store, thinking it would be a good place to get some of the kinks ironed out. The nice people at Crest Foods gave us permission to shoot at one of their stores and were very accommodating. We started on a Friday evening with a scene featuring Jordan and John having a short conversation at the greeting card aisle. We were all set up and ready to shoot when one of the camera setups went down! Our new Samurai (an external recorder that can record at better quality that the camera can internally) just stopped working out of nowhere. AHHH!Fortunately, our other camera rig worked great and we were able to start shooting. We started with a wide shot of the two of them…Despite our signage we couldn’t keep people from wandering into the shot. Take after take, people walked by and looked right into the camera. Luckily, Jordan and John are very patient actors.

TAKE 3TAKE 4TAKE 5TAKE 6 We finally got the shot, but this would be a reoccurring theme every time we tried to shoot wide the entire weekend. Despite that, we managed to stay on schedule and wrap our first weekend. Next up, we’re shooting some action stuff in the rain, a scene in Alan’s apartment and a scene that we will release in a few weeks as part of a teaser. Hopefully, none of those scenes will have any unintentional extras!

Jordan Farris plays the lead role, Alan Jones. Alan had recently been fired from his job and threatened by his landlord, when he was kidnapped and mutilated by a mysterious doctor and thrown back in time with an Army of Frankensteins.

Virginia (Raychelle McDonald) and Maggie (Shellie Sterling) are sisters just who have just recently escaped from a plantation. They join the Union as nurses and soon find themselves fighting am enemy more terrifying then they could ever imagine.

Here’s Laura in action with Eric (Frankenstein). One of our challenges is to make a Frankenstein that is easily identified as a Frankenstein at first look, but has a unique look to our movie. This is just a small look at the beginning of what our Frankenstein will eventually become.

As of today…

1. All of the costumes are ordered and have been shipped.

2. The lumber has been ordered for the sets.

3. All of the roles (except for one) have been cast.

4. The authentic Civil War era tents for the outdoor shots have been ordered.

5. The prop weapons have all been ordered and are being shipped.

One of our biggest challenges will be to make the Civil War portion of our movie look believable. We’ve taken extra care in making sure that everything is as authentic as our budget will allow. The tents are made with the same type of canvas that was used in the 19th century. The uniforms for the soldiers are made from the same materials and patterns that were used during the Civil War. The rank insignias will be authentic to each soldiers uniform, and the weapons will also be accurate to the time period.
